D&D 5e races and species

The 2014 rules call them races (SRD 5.1) and the 2024 rules species (SRD 5.2). Here are both, side by side: the half-elf and half-orc appear only in 2014, the goliath and orc only in 2024.

Race or species?

They’re the same choice under two names. The bigger change in 2024 is where your ability score increases come from: a 2014 race sets them (a dwarf gets Constitution +2), while in 2024 your background does, so any species suits any class. The builder supports both, and Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything’s option to move racial increases around.

These are the openly licensed SRD options. The builder has 143 races and variants from across the books; see supported books.
