This bag has an interior space considerably larger than its outside dimensions, roughly 2 feet in diameter at the mouth and 4 feet deep. The bag can hold up to 500 pounds, not exceeding a volume of 64 cubic feet. The bag weighs 15 pounds, regardless of its contents. Retrieving an item from the bag requires an action.
If the bag is overloaded, pierced, or torn, it ruptures and is destroyed, and its contents are scattered in the Astral Plane. If the bag is turned inside out, its contents spill forth, unharmed, but the bag must be put right before it can be used again. Breathing creatures inside the bag can survive up to a number of minutes equal to 10 divided by the number of creatures (minimum 1 minute), after which time they begin to suffocate.
Placing a bag of holding inside an extradimensional space created by a handy haversack, portable hole, or similar item instantly destroys both items and opens a gate to the Astral Plane. The gate originates where the one item was placed inside the other. Any creature within 10 feet of the gate is sucked through it to a random location on the Astral Plane. The gate then closes. The gate is one-way only and can't be reopened.
How the Bag of Holding plays
It holds up to 500 pounds or 64 cubic feet and always weighs 15 pounds. For most parties it ends the argument about who carries the loot, the rope, the spare armor and the dragon’s hoard.
It has limits that come up in play. The mouth is 2 feet across, so anything bigger won’t go in. Getting an item back out takes an action, so a potion kept in the bag takes one action to fish out and another to drink. And if it’s overfilled, pierced or torn, it bursts and its contents are scattered across the Astral Plane.
Common questions
What happens if you put a Bag of Holding in a Portable Hole?
Both items are destroyed and a one-way gate to the Astral Plane opens. Every creature within 10 feet is pulled through to a random spot on the Astral Plane. The same happens with a Handy Haversack or any similar extradimensional space.
Can you put one Bag of Holding inside another?
The item doesn’t name itself, but a second bag of holding is an extradimensional space, so most tables treat it as a “similar item”: both are destroyed and the gate opens.
Does the bag’s contents count toward my carrying capacity?
No. The bag always weighs 15 pounds, however much is in it.
Can a creature ride inside?
If it fits through the 2-foot mouth, yes. Breathing creatures inside can last 10 minutes divided by the number of creatures (at least 1 minute) before they start to suffocate.
How much does a Bag of Holding cost?
It’s uncommon. The Dungeon Master’s Guide puts uncommon items at 101 to 500 gp, and the builder’s Standard Conversion prices them at 500 gp.
What happens if you turn it inside out?
Everything spills out unharmed, and the bag doesn’t work again until it’s turned back the right way.

This bag has an interior space considerably larger than its outside dimensions—roughly 2 feet square and 4 feet deep on the inside. The bag can hold up to 500 pounds, not exceeding a volume of 64 cubic feet. The bag weighs 5 pounds, regardless of its contents. Retrieving an item from the bag requires a Utilize action.
If the bag is overloaded, pierced, or torn, it is destroyed, and its contents are scattered in the Astral Plane. If the bag is turned inside out, its contents spill forth unharmed, but the bag must be put right before it can be used again. The bag holds enough air for 10 minutes of breathing, divided by the number of breathing creatures inside.
Placing a Bag of Holding inside an extradimensional space created by a Handy Haversack, Portable Hole, or similar item instantly destroys both items and opens a gate to the Astral Plane. The gate originates where the one item was placed inside the other. Any creature within a 10-foot-radius Sphere centered on the gate is sucked through it to a random location on the Astral Plane. The gate then closes. The gate is one-way and can't be reopened.
