How the Cloak of Protection plays

While you wear it, you get +1 to Armor Class and +1 to every saving throw. There’s nothing to activate and nothing to track; it’s simply on.

A +1 sounds small, but it’s a 5% swing on every attack against you and every save you make, all game. Because it’s not armor, it works with any armor, with a shield, and with no armor at all.

Who should wear it

Common questions

Does Cloak of Protection stack with Ring of Protection?

Yes. They’re different items, so you can wear both for +2 AC and +2 to saves, at the cost of two attunement slots.

Can I wear two Cloaks of Protection?

No. A character can normally wear only one cloak at a time.

Does it stack with Bracers of Defense?

Yes. The bracers only need you to wear no armor and carry no shield, and a cloak is neither.

Does it help with concentration?

Yes. Concentration checks are Constitution saving throws, so the +1 applies.

Does it require attunement?

Yes. You need a short rest with it to attune, and you can be attuned to at most three items at once.

How much does a Cloak of Protection cost?

It’s uncommon. The Dungeon Master’s Guide puts uncommon items at 101 to 500 gp, and the builder’s Standard Conversion prices them at 500 gp.

Cloak of Protection compared with similar items

ItemHow it compares
Ring of ProtectionRare, and exactly the same +1 to AC and saves, in a ring. Wear both if you can spare the attunement.
Stone of Good LuckUncommon: +1 to ability checks and saves instead of AC. Better for a skill-focused character.
Bracers of DefenseRare: +2 AC, but only with no armor and no shield. Made for monks, wizards and sorcerers.
Cloak of DisplacementRare: attackers have disadvantage against you until you take damage, and it resets at the start of your next turn. Best against a single big attack a round; it does less against many small attacks.
Mantle of Spell ResistanceRare: advantage on saves against spells. Also a cloak, so it’s one or the other.

Cloak of Protection in the 2024 rules

The 2024 Dungeon Master’s Guide revised the magic items, and the SRD 5.2 carries the new text. What changed:

Same rarity and attunement; the text is reworded for the 2024 rules glossary.
