This ordinary bag, made from gray, rust, or tan cloth, appears empty. Reaching inside the bag, however, reveals the presence of a small, fuzzy object. The bag weighs 1/2 pound.

You can use an action to pull the fuzzy object from the bag and throw it up to 20 feet. When the object lands, it transforms into a creature you determine by rolling a d8 and consulting the table that corresponds to the bag's color. The creature vanishes at the next dawn or when it is reduced to 0 hit points.

The creature is friendly to you and your companions, and it acts on your turn. You can use a bonus action to command how the creature moves and what action it takes on its next turn, or to give it general orders, such as to attack your enemies. In the absence of such orders, the creature acts in a fashion appropriate to its nature.

Once three fuzzy objects have been pulled from the bag, the bag can't be used again until the next dawn.

Variants

How the Bag of Tricks plays

The bag looks empty, but there’s a small fuzzy ball inside. As an action you pull it out and throw it up to 20 feet, and it turns into an animal rolled on a d8 table for your bag’s color. The creature is friendly, acts on your turn, and stays until the next dawn or until it drops to 0 hit points. You can do this three times, then the bag is empty until dawn.

Commanding it takes a bonus action each turn; otherwise it does what that kind of animal would do. The results range from a harmless rat to a brown bear or tiger. It’s uncommon and needs no attunement.

Who should carry it

Common questions

What can come out of a Bag of Tricks?

Gray bag: weasel, giant rat, badger, boar, panther, giant badger, dire wolf, giant elk. Rust bag: rat, owl, mastiff, goat, giant goat, giant boar, lion, brown bear. Tan bag: jackal, ape, baboon, axe beak, black bear, giant weasel, giant hyena, tiger.

Which Bag of Tricks is best?

The rust bag, for fighting: its top half is a giant goat, a giant boar (CR 2), a lion and a brown bear. The gray bag also tops out at CR 2 with a giant elk, but its top half includes a panther and a giant badger. The tan bag’s best roll is a tiger.

How many times a day can you use a Bag of Tricks?

Three. After the third fuzzy object comes out, the bag doesn’t work again until the next dawn.

How long does the creature last?

Until the next dawn, or until it drops to 0 hit points. It doesn’t need you to concentrate.

Do I have to command the creature?

Only if you want to choose what it does. A bonus action lets you direct its movement and action, or give general orders like “attack our enemies”. Without orders, it acts like the animal it is.

Did the 2024 rules change the Bag of Tricks?

Slightly. Pulling out a creature is a Magic action, and the creature acts right after you in the initiative order instead of on your turn. The tables are the same.
