While you wear this cloak with its hood up, Wisdom (Perception) checks made to see you have disadvantage, and you have advantage on Dexterity (Stealth) checks made to hide, as the cloak's color shifts to camouflage you. Pulling the hood up or down requires an action.
How the Cloak of Elvenkind plays
With the hood up, you have advantage on Dexterity (Stealth) checks made to hide, and Wisdom (Perception) checks made to see you have disadvantage. That’s two separate swings in your favor: you roll better, and the guards roll worse.
The disadvantage also lowers passive Perception by 5 against you, which is how most DMs decide whether a sentry notices a sneaking character. Pulling the hood up or down takes an action, so put it up before you start sneaking. The cloak is uncommon and requires attunement.
Who should wear it
The party’s scout: a rogue, ranger or monk who hides every fight or goes ahead alone.
Heavy-armor wearers who have to sneak. Advantage cancels the disadvantage that plate or splint armor imposes on Stealth, so a paladin rolls normally again.
Not a combat item. It helps you hide, and a rogue who hides as a bonus action each turn gets real value in a fight too, but it adds nothing to AC or saves.
Common questions
Does Cloak of Elvenkind stack with Pass without Trace?
Yes. Pass without Trace gives +10 to Stealth checks, and the cloak gives advantage. They’re different kinds of bonus, so you get both.
Does it stack with Boots of Elvenkind?
The advantage doesn’t: two sources of advantage still mean rolling two dice. But the boots also make your steps silent, which the cloak doesn’t, so the pair still works well together.
Does the disadvantage affect passive Perception?
Yes. Disadvantage on a check means −5 to the passive score, so a guard with passive Perception 13 counts as 8 against you: a Stealth check of 8 or more gets past it.
Do I have to keep the hood up?
In the 2014 rules, yes: the cloak only works with the hood up, and raising or lowering it takes an action. The 2024 version drops the hood and gives advantage on all Stealth checks.
Does it make me invisible?
No. It camouflages you, so hiding gets much easier, but anyone who has already spotted you can still see you.
How much does a Cloak of Elvenkind cost?
It’s uncommon. The Dungeon Master’s Guide puts uncommon items at 101 to 500 gp, and the builder’s Standard Conversion prices them at 500 gp.
