While wearing this ring, you can turn invisible as an action. Anything you are wearing or carrying is invisible with you. You remain invisible until the ring is removed, until you attack or cast a spell, or until you use a bonus action to become visible again.
How the Ring of Invisibility plays
While you wear it, you can use an action to turn invisible, along with everything you’re wearing and carrying. There’s no duration and no limit on uses: you stay invisible until you take the ring off, attack, cast a spell, or use a bonus action to reappear. Then you can do it again.
Invisible means attack rolls against you have disadvantage and your attack rolls have advantage, and nothing can see you without magic or a special sense. It doesn’t make you silent, though. Creatures can still hear you, spot your footprints and guess which square you’re in. The ring is legendary and requires attunement, and in a campaign it tends to change how every scouting trip, escape and infiltration goes.
Who should wear it
The party’s scout. A rogue, ranger or monk who goes ahead alone gets the most from invisibility on demand, since nothing ends it until they choose to act.
Anyone who needs an exit. One action and you’re gone. It’s a reliable way to break line of sight for spells that need a target you can see.
Opening attacks. Your first attack from invisibility has advantage, and a rogue gets Sneak Attack from it. After that the ring needs another action, so it’s a setup, not a turn-by-turn trick.
Common questions
How long does the Ring of Invisibility last?
As long as you like. There’s no duration: you stay invisible until you remove the ring, attack, cast a spell or use a bonus action to become visible, and you can use it again right away.
Does being invisible mean I’m hidden?
No. Creatures can still hear you and track you, so they may know where you are and attack that square (with disadvantage). Invisibility lets you try to hide anywhere, because you count as heavily obscured, but you still make a Dexterity (Stealth) check.
Does casting a spell end the ring’s invisibility?
Yes, any spell, even one that only heals an ally. So does making any attack. That’s the same rule as the 2nd-level Invisibility spell.
Can a rogue use Fast Hands to turn invisible as a bonus action?
No. The Dungeon Master’s Guide says activating a magic item isn’t the Use an Object action, so Fast Hands can’t be used for it. Turning invisible always costs your action.
Did the 2024 rules change the Ring of Invisibility?
Yes. In the 2024 version it takes a Magic action to turn invisible, and you stay invisible until you remove the ring or use a bonus action to reappear. Attacking and casting spells no longer end it. This page and the builder use the 2014 rules.
How much is a Ring of Invisibility worth?
It’s legendary. The Dungeon Master’s Guide puts legendary items at 50,001 gp and up, and the builder’s Standard Conversion prices them at 200,000 gp.
Uncommon: advantage on Stealth checks to hide and disadvantage on Perception to see you. The budget way to stay unseen.
