You or a creature you touch becomes invisible until the spell ends. Anything the target is wearing or carrying is invisible as long as it is on the target's person.

How Greater Invisibility plays

You or a creature you touch turns invisible for up to a minute while you concentrate. Unlike Invisibility, attacking or casting spells doesn’t end it, so it lasts the whole fight. The target’s attacks have advantage against anyone who can’t see it, and attacks against it have disadvantage.

For a character who attacks a lot, that’s a huge boost: a rogue gets advantage for Sneak Attack every turn, and a fighter with several attacks makes them all with advantage. On yourself it’s defense as well: a creature that can’t see you can’t target you with spells like Hold Person, and it can’t Counterspell you, because that needs it to see you casting.

When to pick Greater Invisibility

Common questions

Does Greater Invisibility end when you attack?

No. That’s the difference from Invisibility: you can attack and cast spells for the full minute and stay invisible. Only losing concentration, or the minute running out, ends it.

Do I get advantage on every attack?

Against every creature that can’t see you, yes. A creature with blindsight or truesight within range, or one under See Invisibility, attacks and is attacked normally.

Can I hide while Greater Invisibility is up?

Yes. An invisible creature counts as heavily obscured for hiding, so you can take the Hide action almost anywhere. Once hidden, enemies don’t know which square you’re in and have to guess.

How do you fight an invisible enemy?

Make it visible or stop needing to see it. Faerie Fire outlines it, See Invisibility shows it to you, and area spells like Fireball don’t need a target. You can also attack the square you think it’s in, with disadvantage, or break the caster’s concentration.

Is Greater Invisibility concentration?

Yes, up to 1 minute. If you cast it on an ally, you’re the one making Constitution saves to keep it going, so stay out of harm’s way.

Greater Invisibility compared with similar spells and items

SpellHow it compares
Invisibility2nd level: up to an hour, but the first attack or spell ends it. Better for sneaking than fighting.
Blur2nd level, self only: attackers have disadvantage for up to a minute, but you’re still seen and get no advantage.
Mirror Image2nd level, no concentration: three illusory duplicates that attacks may hit instead of you.
Blink3rd level, no concentration: at the end of each turn, an 11 or higher on a d20 sends you to the Ethereal Plane until your next turn.
Cloak of DisplacementRare cloak: attackers have disadvantage against you until you take damage, then again from your next turn. No slot, no concentration.
