This elegant garment is made from exquisite cloth of white, gray, or black and adorned with silvery runes. The robe's color corresponds to the alignment for which the item was created. A white robe was made for good, gray for neutral, and black for evil. You can't attune to a robe of the archmagi that doesn't correspond to your alignment.

You gain these benefits while wearing the robe:

If you aren't wearing armor, your base Armor Class is 15 + your Dexterity modifier.

You have advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects.

Your spell save DC and spell attack bonus each increase by 2.

How the Robe of the Archmagi plays

While you wear it, three things happen. If you aren’t wearing armor, your base AC is 15 + your Dexterity modifier. You have advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects. And your spell save DC and spell attack bonus both go up by 2.

It’s legendary and requires attunement by a sorcerer, warlock or wizard. It also comes in three colors: white for good, gray for neutral and black for evil, and you can only attune to the one that matches your alignment.

Who should wear it

Common questions

Does the Robe of the Archmagi stack with Mage Armor?

No. Both set your base AC, so you use one or the other, and the robe’s 15 + Dexterity is 2 better than Mage Armor’s 13 + Dexterity.

Does it stack with a Staff of Power?

Yes. The robe adds +2 to spell save DC and spell attacks, and the Staff of Power adds +2 more to spell attacks, so your spell attacks get +4 with both.

Can I wear Bracers of Defense with the robe?

Yes. The robe isn’t armor, so the bracers add +2 for AC 17 + Dexterity.

What do the robe’s colors mean?

White was made for good, gray for neutral and black for evil. You can’t attune to a robe that doesn’t match your alignment. The 2024 version drops this restriction.

Who can attune to the Robe of the Archmagi?

Only a sorcerer, warlock or wizard, and one whose alignment matches the robe.

How much is a Robe of the Archmagi worth?

It’s legendary. The Dungeon Master’s Guide puts legendary items at 50,001 gp and up, and the builder’s Standard Conversion prices them at 200,000 gp.
