Up to ten berries appear in your hand and are infused with magic for the duration. A creature can use its action to eat one berry. Eating a berry restores 1 hit point, and the berry provides enough nourishment to sustain a creature for one day.

The berries lose their potency if they have not been consumed within 24 hours of the casting of this spell.

How Goodberry plays

Cast it and up to ten magic berries appear in your hand. Eating one takes a creature’s action, restores 1 hit point and counts as a full day’s food. The berries stay potent for 24 hours, and anyone can eat them, so you can hand them round the party.

Ten hit points for a 1st-level slot is poor healing in a fight, and nobody should spend actions eating berries mid-combat to recover 1 hit point. Where Goodberry shines is keeping people alive and fed: a berry is enough to bring an ally at 0 hit points back to consciousness, and one cast feeds ten people for a day.

When to pick Goodberry

Common questions

Can Goodberry revive an unconscious ally?

Yes: any healing brings a creature at 0 hit points back to consciousness, and a berry restores 1. The spell says the creature eating it uses its action, which a downed ally can’t do, so most DMs let you use your action to feed the berry to them.

How long do goodberries last?

24 hours from the casting. After that they lose their magic and are just berries.

Can I cast Goodberry the night before?

Yes. Cast it before your long rest and the berries are good for most of the next day, and you get the slot back when you finish the rest.

Does one berry really feed someone for a whole day?

Yes. Each berry provides enough nourishment to sustain a creature for one day, so one casting can feed ten people or animals.

Did the 2024 rules change Goodberry?

Yes. In the 2024 Player’s Handbook eating a berry is a bonus action instead of an action, the spell always makes ten berries, and they disappear when the 24-hour duration ends. The healing is still 1 hit point per berry.
