Transmutation changes what things are: reshaping creatures (Polymorph), speeding them up (Haste), altering stone, water and weather, and granting new ways to move.
62 transmutation spells in the SRD, 7 of them cantrips; 28 need concentration and 4 can be cast as a ritual. In the 2014 rules, a School of Transmutation wizard copies these into a spellbook for half the usual time and gold.
