Briefly surrounded by silvery mist, you teleport up to 30 feet to an unoccupied space that you can see.

How Misty Step plays

As a bonus action, you teleport up to 30 feet to an unoccupied space you can see. It doesn’t use your movement, it doesn’t provoke opportunity attacks, and it only needs a verbal component, so you can cast it while grappled, restrained or holding a weapon and shield.

It’s the spellcaster’s escape button. Step out of a grapple, off a collapsing ledge, past a line of guards or up to a balcony, then still use your action.

When to pick Misty Step

Common questions

Does Misty Step provoke opportunity attacks?

No. Opportunity attacks are triggered by moving out of reach, and teleporting doesn’t count.

Can I Misty Step out of a grapple?

Yes. A grapple ends when you’re moved out of the grappler’s reach. Being grappled or restrained drops your speed to 0, but teleporting doesn’t use your speed.

Can I teleport through bars, glass or a window?

Yes, as long as you can see the space you’re going to and it’s unoccupied. You don’t need a clear path, only sight of the destination.

Can I bring someone with me?

No, only yourself and what you’re wearing and carrying. Dimension Door can bring one willing creature.

Can I cast Misty Step when I’m silenced or incapacitated?

No. It needs a verbal component, so a gag or Silence stops it, and an incapacitated creature can’t cast spells at all.

Does it use my movement?

No. You can move, Misty Step, and keep moving with whatever speed you have left.

SpellHow it compares
Dimension Door4th level: 500 feet, you can bring one willing creature, and you don’t need to see the destination. It costs your action.
Expeditious Retreat1st level: Dash as a bonus action every turn for 10 minutes, with concentration. More total distance, but no escaping grapples or crossing gaps.
Blink3rd level: each turn you might vanish to the Ethereal Plane, then reappear up to 10 feet away. A defense spell rather than an escape.
Fly3rd level: a 60-foot flying speed with concentration. Solves the same cliffs and gaps for longer.
