This stoppered flask sloshes when shaken, as if it contains water. The decanter weighs 2 pounds.
You can use an action to remove the stopper and speak one of three command words, whereupon an amount of fresh water or salt water (your choice) pours out of the flask. The water stops pouring out at the start of your next turn. Choose from the following options:
"Stream" produces 1 gallon of water.
"Fountain" produces 5 gallons of water.
"Geyser" produces 30 gallons of water that gushes forth in a geyser 30 feet long and 1 foot wide. As a bonus action while holding the decanter, you can aim the geyser at a creature you can see within 30 feet of you. The target must succeed on a DC 13 Strength saving throw or take 1d4 bludgeoning damage and fall prone. Instead of a creature, you can target an object that isn't being worn or carried and that weighs no more than 200 pounds. The object is either knocked over or pushed up to 15 feet away from you.
How the Decanter of Endless Water plays
As an action you pull the stopper and speak a command word, and fresh or salt water pours out until the start of your next turn: 1 gallon (“stream”), 5 gallons (“fountain”) or 30 gallons (“geyser”). There’s no limit on uses and it never runs dry.
The geyser is also a weak weapon. It gushes in a line 30 feet long and 1 foot wide, and as a bonus action you can aim it at a creature within 30 feet: a DC 13 Strength save or 1d4 bludgeoning and knocked prone. Aimed at an unattended object of 200 pounds or less, it knocks it over or pushes it up to 15 feet. The decanter is uncommon and needs no attunement.
Who should carry it
Any party that travels. Unlimited drinking water ends worries about deserts, sieges and long sea voyages.
Problem solvers. Putting out fires, filling a pit to float something up, washing away tracks, flooding a burrow.
Anyone who wants a free prone effect. Knocking an enemy prone for your melee allies is a decent use of an action when you have nothing better.
Common questions
How much water does the Decanter of Endless Water make?
Per use: 1 gallon (stream), 5 gallons (fountain) or 30 gallons (geyser), about 4 cubic feet. You can use it every turn, forever.
How long does it take to flood a room?
A 10-foot cube holds about 7,500 gallons, so it takes about 250 geyser uses, one per round: roughly 25 minutes of doing nothing else. It won’t fill a dungeon in a fight.
Can the geyser knock someone prone?
Yes. As a bonus action while holding it, aim the geyser at a creature within 30 feet: it must succeed on a DC 13 Strength save or take 1d4 bludgeoning damage and fall prone.
Does the Decanter need attunement?
No. Anyone can use it.
Did the 2024 rules change the Decanter?
A little. The 1-gallon word is “Splash”, aiming the geyser needs no action, it hits one creature of your choice in its 30-foot line, and an object it hits is knocked over but not pushed.
How much is a Decanter of Endless Water worth?
It’s uncommon. The Dungeon Master’s Guide puts uncommon items at 101 to 500 gp, and the builder’s Standard Conversion prices them at 500 gp.
