While you wear these boots, you have a flying speed equal to your walking speed. You can use the boots to fly for up to 4 hours, all at once or in several shorter flights, each one using a minimum of 1 minute from the duration. If you are flying when the duration expires, you descend at a rate of 30 feet per round until you land.

The boots regain 2 hours of flying capability for every 12 hours they aren't in use.

How Winged Boots play

While you wear them, you have a flying speed equal to your walking speed. The catch is a budget: 4 hours of flight, used all at once or in shorter flights, and each flight uses at least 1 minute. The boots regain 2 hours for every 12 hours they aren’t used, so a fully drained pair needs a day off to refill.

Four hours covers most of what a party does in a day: every fight, a climb up a cliff face, crossing a chasm. If the time runs out while you’re in the air, you drift down at 30 feet per round instead of falling. The boots are uncommon and require attunement, which makes them one of the cheapest ways to fly all day.

Who should wear them

Common questions

How long can you fly with Winged Boots?

Up to 4 hours in total, in one flight or several, with each flight counting as at least 1 minute. They regain 2 hours of flight for every 12 hours they aren’t in use.

Do Winged Boots take an action to use?

Not in the 2014 rules. You simply have a flying speed while you wear them; the only limit is the time budget. In the 2024 version, starting a flight takes a Magic action.

What happens when the flight time runs out in the air?

You descend 30 feet per round until you land, so you don’t take falling damage from the boots running out.

How fast do Winged Boots let you fly?

At your walking speed, whatever that is. Anything that raises your walking speed, like Longstrider or a monk’s Unarmored Movement, raises your flying speed too.

What changed in the 2024 rules?

The 2024 boots have 4 charges and regain 1d4 at dawn. Each charge is a Magic action that gives a flying speed of 30 feet for 1 hour.

How much do Winged Boots cost?

They’re uncommon. The Dungeon Master’s Guide puts uncommon items at 101 to 500 gp, and the builder’s Standard Conversion prices them at 500 gp.
