How Fire Bolt plays
You make a ranged spell attack against a creature or object up to 120 feet away. On a hit it takes 1d10 fire damage, and a flammable object that nobody is wearing or carrying catches fire. The damage grows with your character level: 2d10 at 5th, 3d10 at 11th and 4d10 at 17th.
It’s the standard attack cantrip for sorcerers and wizards: the biggest damage die of any attack-roll cantrip on their lists, at the longest range. It’s what you do on the turns you don’t want to spend a spell slot.
When to pick Fire Bolt
Most sorcerers and wizards take it as their main damage cantrip. Artificers can take it too.
Carry a second damage type. Fire is resisted or ignored by about one in six monsters in the SRD, including devils, many demons, fire elementals and red dragons. Ray of Frost, Chill Touch or a saving-throw cantrip covers the gap.
Use the fire. It lights candles, burns ropes, torches hay bales and sets fire to webs, so it’s useful outside combat, too.
Common questions
How much damage does Fire Bolt do?
1d10 fire (5.5 on average) at 1st level, 2d10 (11) at 5th, 3d10 (16.5) at 11th and 4d10 (22) at 17th. It uses character level, not class level.
Can Fire Bolt target objects?
Yes, it can target a creature or an object, and a flammable object that isn’t worn or carried is set on fire.
Does Fire Bolt set a creature’s clothes on fire?
No. Objects someone is wearing or carrying don’t ignite.
Does Fire Bolt have disadvantage in melee?
Yes. It’s a ranged attack, so it has disadvantage when a hostile creature that can see you is within 5 feet of you.
Do I add my ability modifier to Fire Bolt’s damage?
Not normally. Some features add it, such as the Evocation wizard’s Empowered Evocation at 10th level, which adds your Intelligence modifier to one damage roll of a wizard evocation spell.
Does Fire Bolt stop a troll from regenerating?
Yes. Any fire damage stops a troll’s regeneration at the start of its next turn, so a Fire Bolt on a troll at 0 hit points helps finish it off.
