You imbue a creature you touch with positive energy to undo a debilitating effect. You can reduce the target's exhaustion level by one, or end one of the following effects on the target:
One curse, including the target's attunement to a cursed magic item
Any reduction to one of the target's ability scores
One effect reducing the target's hit point maximum
How Greater Restoration plays
You touch a creature and undo one serious effect on it. Pick one: reduce its exhaustion by one level, or end one effect that charmed or petrified it, one curse (including attunement to a cursed magic item), any reduction to one of its ability scores, or one effect reducing its hit point maximum. It costs 100 gp of diamond dust, which the spell consumes.
It’s the fix for effects that nothing cheaper touches: a medusa’s stone gaze, a cursed sword you can’t put down, or a vampire’s charm. It only removes one effect per casting, so a character with three levels of exhaustion needs three castings or three long rests.
When to pick Greater Restoration
Clerics, druids and bards should keep it ready from 9th level, along with a supply of diamond dust. When someone is petrified, no other spell at this level helps.
Check the list before casting. Diseases, poison, blindness and deafness aren’t on it: Lesser Restoration handles those for a 2nd-level slot.
Against charm-heavy enemies like vampires and hags, it breaks a charm on an ally immediately, but it costs your action and a 5th-level slot.
Common questions
Does Greater Restoration cure exhaustion?
It reduces exhaustion by one level per casting. A long rest with food and water also removes one level.
Does Greater Restoration cure petrification?
Yes. It ends one effect that petrified the target, such as a medusa’s or basilisk’s gaze, and the creature returns to flesh.
Can it remove a cursed magic item?
It ends one curse, including your attunement to a cursed item, so you can take the item off or throw it away. The item itself stays cursed; Remove Curse works the same way at 3rd level.
Can it restore a hit point maximum drained by undead?
Yes. It ends one effect reducing the target’s hit point maximum, such as a wight’s or vampire’s drain. Most of those also end on a long rest, so it matters most when you can’t rest.
Can paladins cast Greater Restoration?
Not under the 2014 rules: it’s a bard, cleric and druid spell. The 2024 rules add it to the paladin and ranger lists, and word it as ending the Charmed or Petrified condition.
The 2024 Player’s Handbook revised many spells, and the SRD 5.2 carries the new text. What changed from the 2014 version above:
Added to the Paladin and Ranger spell lists.
