Gauntlets of Ogre Power 5e magic item
Wondrous item, uncommon (requires attunement) · 2024 version below
How the Gauntlets of Ogre Power play
While you wear them, your Strength score is 19, the same as an ogre’s. If your Strength is already 19 or higher, they do nothing. They’re uncommon and require attunement.
For a character built around another ability, that’s a big change: a character with 10 Strength gets +4 to Strength attacks, damage, Athletics checks, grapples and shoves, and far more carrying capacity. A monk or rogue with 10 Strength can suddenly wrestle an orc to the ground.
Who should wear them
- Low-level Strength fighters, paladins and barbarians with 16 or 17 Strength, who get +1 now and can spend their next ASI on a feat.
- Dexterity or spellcasting characters who want to grapple, carry heavy loads or use heavy weapons.
- Pass them on later. Once your Strength reaches 19, give them to someone who needs them.
Common questions
Do Gauntlets of Ogre Power add to Strength or set it?
They set your Strength to 19 while you wear them. If yours is 19 or higher, they have no effect.
Do they stack with a Belt of Giant Strength?
No. Both set your Strength, so you use the higher score. A giant strength belt always wins.
Do they help with grappling?
Yes. Grappling and shoving use Strength (Athletics), so the higher score helps directly.
Do they let a monk punch harder?
Only if the monk uses Strength for unarmed strikes. Monks can use Strength or Dexterity for Martial Arts, so a monk with low Dexterity but the gauntlets could switch.
Do they require attunement?
Yes.
