How ogres fight

An ogre is a Large, stupid, very strong giant. It swings a greatclub for 2d8 + 4 bludgeoning (13 on average) or throws a javelin for 2d6 + 4. It has 59 hit points and AC 11, so it’s easy to hit, but it takes a lot of hits to bring down.

It has no special abilities at all, which makes it one of the simplest monsters to run. The danger is the size of each hit: a 1st-level wizard or sorcerer has fewer hit points than one average greatclub swing.

Common questions

How dangerous is an ogre at 1st level?

Very. It’s CR 2 (450 XP), which the Dungeon Master’s Guide’s encounter math makes Deadly for four 1st-level characters and Medium for four at 2nd level. Each hit averages 13 damage and can knock out a 1st-level character.

Does Hold Person work on an ogre?

No. An ogre is a giant, not a humanoid. Use Hold Monster, or Sleep once it’s wounded enough for the roll to cover its hit points.

Can ogres talk?

Yes, they speak Common and Giant, though not cleverly.

Can an ogre see in the dark?

Yes, it has darkvision out to 60 feet.

What makes Gauntlets of Ogre Power special?

They set the wearer’s Strength to 19, close to the ogre’s own 19. See Gauntlets of Ogre Power.

How many ogres for a fight?

An ogre is worth 450 XP. Using the 2024 encounter budgets (SRD 5.2), this is how many ogres fit each difficulty for a party of four characters of the same level. A dash means even one would be over the budget.

How the ogre compares at CR 2

Against the 42 other challenge 2 monsters in the SRD 5.1, the ogre has more hit points than 31 of them, which makes it tougher than most at its CR. See every CR 2 monster.
