This ring stores spells cast into it, holding them until the attuned wearer uses them. The ring can store up to 5 levels worth of spells at a time. When found, it contains 1d6 - 1 levels of stored spells chosen by the GM.
Any creature can cast a spell of 1st through 5th level into the ring by touching the ring as the spell is cast. The spell has no effect, other than to be stored in the ring. If the ring can't hold the spell, the spell is expended without effect. The level of the slot used to cast the spell determines how much space it uses.
While wearing this ring, you can cast any spell stored in it. The spell uses the slot level, spell save DC, spell attack bonus, and spellcasting ability of the original caster, but is otherwise treated as if you cast the spell. The spell cast from the ring is no longer stored in it, freeing up space.
How the Ring of Spell Storing plays
The ring holds up to 5 levels of spells. Anyone can cast a 1st- to 5th-level spell into it by touching the ring as they cast; the spell does nothing except fill the ring, and the slot level decides how much room it takes. Later, whoever is attuned to it and wearing it can cast any stored spell, which then leaves the ring and frees the space.
A spell cast from the ring uses the original caster’s slot level, spell save DC, attack bonus and spellcasting ability. That’s the trick: the wizard loads the ring during downtime, and the fighter casts the wizard’s spell at the wizard’s DC in the middle of a fight. It’s rare and requires attunement, with no class restriction.
Who should wear it
A non-caster with a caster friend. A fighter or barbarian with Shield, Misty Step or Healing Word stored has answers they could never have otherwise.
A caster who runs out of slots. Load it with spare slots before a long rest and you start the next day with 5 extra levels of spells.
A party that shares it. The ring can be refilled by anyone, so the cleric and wizard can top it up between fights.
Common questions
Can a character who isn’t a spellcaster use a Ring of Spell Storing?
Yes. Any creature attuned to it and wearing it can cast the stored spells, and the attunement has no class requirement.
Whose spell save DC does the stored spell use?
The original caster’s: their slot level, save DC, spell attack bonus and spellcasting ability, not yours.
What are the best spells to store?
Reactions and emergencies. Shield (1 level) and Counterspell (3 levels) together fill four of the five levels; Misty Step and Healing Word are good escape and rescue spells for anyone.
Do I have to concentrate on a spell cast from the ring?
Yes. The spell is treated as if you cast it, so a concentration spell like Hold Person needs your concentration, not the original caster’s.
Can I store a spell cast with a higher-level slot?
Yes, and it takes up that much room. A Cure Wounds cast with a 3rd-level slot fills 3 of the 5 levels and heals as a 3rd-level Cure Wounds.
How much is a Ring of Spell Storing worth?
It’s rare. The Dungeon Master’s Guide puts rare items at 501 to 5,000 gp, and the builder’s Standard Conversion prices them at 5,000 gp.
Legendary: advantage on saves against spells that target only you, and a natural 20 can reflect the spell.
