An invisible wall of force springs into existence at a point you choose within range. The wall appears in any orientation you choose, as a horizontal or vertical barrier or at an angle. It can be free floating or resting on a solid surface. You can form it into a hemispherical dome or a sphere with a radius of up to 10 feet, or you can shape a flat surface made up of ten 10-foot-by-10-foot panels. Each panel must be contiguous with another panel. In any form, the wall is 1/4 inch thick. It lasts for the duration. If the wall cuts through a creature's space when it appears, the creature is pushed to one side of the wall (your choice which side).
Nothing can physically pass through the wall. It is immune to all damage and can't be dispelled by dispel magic. A disintegrate spell destroys the wall instantly, however. The wall also extends into the Ethereal Plane, blocking ethereal travel through the wall.
How Wall of Force plays
An invisible wall appears within 120 feet, lasting up to 10 minutes with concentration. It can be a flat surface of up to ten 10-by-10-foot panels, or a dome or sphere up to 10 feet in radius. Nothing can physically pass through it, it’s immune to all damage, Dispel Magic doesn’t work on it, and it blocks travel through the Ethereal Plane too. Only Disintegrate destroys it.
It’s one of the strongest battlefield spells in the game. Wall off half the enemies and fight the other half. Trap the dragon in a dome while you prepare. Close a corridor behind the party as the horde arrives. There’s no saving throw: if the wall cuts through a creature’s space, you choose which side it ends up on.
When to pick Wall of Force
Every wizard who reaches 9th level should seriously consider it. It’s on the wizard list alone.
Split the encounter. Most fights get much easier if half the enemies can’t reach you for ten minutes.
Trap, then deal with it. A sphere around a single dangerous foe takes it out of the fight with no save; it can only get out with Disintegrate, teleportation or by breaking your concentration.
Common questions
Can you see through Wall of Force?
Yes, it’s invisible. You can see through it, but it gives total cover, so nothing can target or attack across it.
Can spells pass through Wall of Force?
No. A spell needs a clear path to its target or point of origin, and the wall blocks it. That includes your own spells from inside a dome.
Can you teleport out of Wall of Force?
The rules say nothing can physically pass through it. Tables differ on teleportation: many DMs let Misty Step reach a space you can see on the other side, since you don’t cross the wall. Ask before you plan around it.
What destroys Wall of Force?
Only Disintegrate, which destroys it instantly. It’s immune to all damage and can’t be dispelled. Ending your concentration also ends it.
Is there a saving throw against Wall of Force?
No. If it appears through a creature’s space, you choose which side the creature is pushed to.
Can I trap a creature inside a sphere?
Yes, a sphere or dome up to 10 feet in radius fully encloses it. It can’t get out by walking, burrowing or going ethereal.
