Traits
Antimagic Susceptibility. The rug is incapacitated while in the area of an antimagic field. If targeted by dispel magic, the rug must succeed on a Constitution saving throw against the caster's spell save DC or fall unconscious for 1 minute.
Damage Transfer. While it is grappling a creature, the rug takes only half the damage dealt to it, and the creature grappled by the rug takes the other half.
False Appearance. While the rug remains motionless, it is indistinguishable from a normal rug.
Actions
Smother. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., one Medium or smaller creature. Hit: The creature is grappled (escape DC 13). Until this grapple ends, the target is restrained, blinded, and at risk of suffocating, and the rug can't smother another target. In addition, at the start of each of the target's turns, the target takes 10 (2d6 + 3) bludgeoning damage.
How many rugs of smothering for a fight?
A rug of smothering is worth 450 XP. Using the 2024 encounter budgets (SRD 5.2), this is how many rugs of smothering fit each difficulty for a party of four characters of the same level. A dash means even one would be over the budget.

2024 stat block: Animated Rug of Smothering
The 2024 Monster Manual revised the rug of smothering, and the SRD 5.2 carries the new stat block. What changed:
It’s called the Animated Rug of Smothering in the 2024 rules.
Hit points: 33 → 27.
Gone from it: Antimagic Susceptibility, Damage Transfer and False Appearance.
Smother. Melee Attack Roll: +5, reach 5 ft. Hit: 10 (2d6 + 3) Bludgeoning damage. If the target is a Medium or smaller creature, the rug can give it the Grappled condition (escape DC 13) instead of dealing damage. Until the grapple ends, the target has the Blinded and Restrained conditions, is suffocating, and takes 10 (2d6 + 3) Bludgeoning damage at the start of each of its turns. The rug can smother only one creature at a time. While grappling the target, the rug can’t take this action, the rug halves the damage it takes (round down), and the target takes the same amount of damage.
