Traits
Legendary Resistance (3/Day). If the tarrasque fails a saving throw, it can choose to succeed instead.
Magic Resistance. The tarrasque has advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects.
Reflective Carapace. Any time the tarrasque is targeted by a magic missile spell, a line spell, or a spell that requires a ranged attack roll, roll a d6. On a 1 to 5, the tarrasque is unaffected. On a 6, the tarrasque is unaffected, and the effect is reflected back at the caster as though it originated from the tarrasque, turning the caster into the target.
Siege Monster. The tarrasque deals double damage to objects and structures.
Actions
Multiattack. The tarrasque can use its Frightful Presence. It then makes five attacks: one with its bite, two with its claws, one with its horns, and one with its tail. It can use its Swallow instead of its bite.
Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +19 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 36 (4d12 + 10) piercing damage. If the target is a creature, it is grappled (escape DC 20). Until this grapple ends, the target is restrained, and the tarrasque can't bite another target.
Claw. Melee Weapon Attack: +19 to hit, reach 15 ft., one target. Hit: 28 (4d8 + 10) slashing damage.
Horns. Melee Weapon Attack: +19 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 32 (4d10 + 10) piercing damage.
Tail. Melee Weapon Attack: +19 to hit, reach 20 ft., one target. Hit: 24 (4d6 + 10) bludgeoning damage. If the target is a creature, it must succeed on a DC 20 Strength saving throw or be knocked prone.
Frightful Presence. Each creature of the tarrasque's choice within 120 feet of it and aware of it must succeed on a DC 17 Wisdom saving throw or become frightened for 1 minute. A creature can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, with disadvantage if the tarrasque is within line of sight, ending the effect on itself on a success. If a creature's saving throw is successful or the effect ends for it, the creature is immune to the tarrasque's Frightful Presence for the next 24 hours.
Swallow. The tarrasque makes one bite attack against a Large or smaller creature it is grappling. If the attack hits, the target takes the bite's damage, the target is swallowed, and the grapple ends. While swallowed, the creature is blinded and restrained, it has total cover against attacks and other effects outside the tarrasque, and it takes 56 (16d6) acid damage at the start of each of the tarrasque's turns.
If the tarrasque takes 60 damage or more on a single turn from a creature inside it, the tarrasque must succeed on a DC 20 Constitution saving throw at the end of that turn or regurgitate all swallowed creatures, which fall prone in a space within 10 feet of the tarrasque. If the tarrasque dies, a swallowed creature is no longer restrained by it and can escape from the corpse by using 30 feet of movement, exiting prone.
Legendary actions
Attack. The tarrasque makes one claw attack or tail attack.
Move. The tarrasque moves up to half its speed.
Chomp (Costs 2 Actions). The tarrasque makes one bite attack or uses its Swallow.
How the tarrasque fights
The tarrasque is the only CR 30 monster in the game: a Gargantuan monstrosity with 676 hit points, AC 25 and a +19 to hit. Each turn it can use Frightful Presence and then makes five attacks: bite (4d12 + 10, and it grapples), two claws with 15-foot reach, horns, and a tail with 20-foot reach that knocks targets prone. That’s up to 148 damage a turn, before its three legendary actions.
Anything it bites and grapples, it can Swallow: the victim is blinded and restrained inside and takes 16d6 acid damage at the start of each of its turns. It resists magic with Magic Resistance and three Legendary Resistances a day, it’s immune to fire, poison and nonmagical weapons, and it can’t be charmed, frightened, paralyzed or poisoned. Spells that use a ranged attack roll, lines like Lightning Bolt, and Magic Missile simply fail against it, and on a 6 they bounce back at the caster.
Common questions
How do you kill the tarrasque?
Reduce it to 0 hit points: the 2014 stat block has no regeneration or revival clause. In practice that means magic weapons (it’s immune to nonmagical ones), damage types other than fire and poison, and staying out of its reach. Flying, ranged characters with magic weapons are its biggest weakness.
Can the tarrasque be beaten by flying?
In the 2014 rules, largely yes: it has no fly speed and no ranged attacks, and its longest reach is 20 feet. Frightful Presence still reaches 120 feet. The 2024 Monster Manual fixed this with Thunderous Bellow, a 150-foot cone of 12d12 thunder damage.
What does Reflective Carapace do?
Whenever the tarrasque is targeted by Magic Missile, a line spell, or a spell that needs a ranged attack roll, roll a d6. On 1 to 5 the spell doesn’t affect it; on a 6 it also reflects back at the caster. Spells with saving throws, like Cone of Cold, aren’t affected, though Magic Resistance gives it advantage on the save.
What CR is the tarrasque?
CR 30, the highest in the game, worth 155,000 XP. No party of four characters of any level is below Deadly against it by the Dungeon Master’s Guide’s math.
How do you escape being swallowed by the tarrasque?
Deal 60 damage to it from inside in a single turn; it must then succeed on a DC 20 Constitution save or regurgitate everything it has swallowed. You’re restrained and blinded in there, so attacks and spells that don’t need sight work best. Dimension Door also works for most DMs, since you can name the destination by distance and direction.
Did the tarrasque change in 2024?
Yes. The 2024 version has 697 hit points, drops the horns for one bite and three claw or tail attacks a turn, makes Swallow a bonus action, adds Thunderous Bellow, and its legendary actions include World-Shaking Movement, which breaks concentration and knocks creatures prone around it.

Traits
Legendary Resistance (6/Day). If the tarrasque fails a saving throw, it can choose to succeed instead.
Magic Resistance. The tarrasque has Advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects.
Reflective Carapace. If the tarrasque is targeted by a Magic Missile spell or a spell that requires a ranged attack roll, roll 1d6. On a 1–5, the tarrasque is unaffected. On a 6, the tarrasque is unaffected and reflects the spell, turning the caster into the target.
Siege Monster. The tarrasque deals double damage to objects and structures.
Actions
Multiattack. The tarrasque makes one Bite attack and three other attacks, using Claw or Tail in any combination.
Bite. Melee Attack Roll: +19, reach 15 ft. Hit: 36 (4d12 + 10) Piercing damage, and the target has the Grappled condition (escape DC 20). Until the grapple ends, the target has the Restrained condition and can’t teleport.
Claw. Melee Attack Roll: +19, reach 15 ft. Hit: 28 (4d8 + 10) Slashing damage.
Tail. Melee Attack Roll: +19, reach 30 ft. Hit: 23 (3d8 + 10) Bludgeoning damage. If the target is a Huge or smaller creature, it has the Prone condition.
Thunderous Bellow (Recharge 5–6). Constitution Saving Throw: DC 27, each creature and each object that isn’t being worn or carried in a 150-foot Cone. Failure: 78 (12d12) Thunder damage, and the target has the Deafened and Frightened conditions until the end of its next turn. Success: Half damage only.
Bonus actions
Swallow. Strength Saving Throw: DC 27, one Large or smaller creature Grappled by the tarrasque (it can have up to six creatures swallowed at a time). Failure: The target is swallowed, and the Grappled condition ends. A swallowed creature has the Blinded and Restrained conditions and can’t teleport, it has Total Cover against attacks and other effects outside the tarrasque, and it takes 56 (16d6) Acid damage at the start of each of the tarrasque’s turns. If the tarrasque takes 60 damage or more on a single turn from a creature inside it, the tarrasque must succeed on a DC 20 Constitution saving throw at the end of that turn or regurgitate all swallowed creatures, each of which falls in a space within 10 feet of the tarrasque and has the Prone condition. If the tarrasque dies, any swallowed creature no longer has the Restrained condition and can escape from the corpse using 20 feet of movement, exiting Prone.
Legendary actions
Onslaught. The tarrasque moves up to half its Speed, and it makes one Claw or Tail attack.
World-Shaking Movement. The tarrasque moves up to its Speed. At the end of this movement, the tarrasque creates an instantaneous shock wave in a 60-foot Emanation originating from itself. Creatures in that area lose Concentration and, if Medium or smaller, have the Prone condition. The tarrasque can’t take this action again until the start of its next turn.
